Rule 1: A Pro lives by The Code for a reason

Posted on January 19, 2024March 27, 2025 by Duncan Zaves

The most important distinction between a Pro and the the hapless non-Pro is they are deliberate. They know why they do what they do. They don’t follow rules for the sake of following rules. They focus on doing the things that help them achieve their goals.

Imagine every goal as a pin on a map. The Code is your car. Using The Code without knowing your goals is a joyride. You might have a good time, but you’ll never get anywhere.  I know for a fact that The Code can get you all sorts of places – but a Pro is going to the next pin on the map. And once a Pro gets there, they will choose to settle down or pick a new destination.

There’s a fine line between assessing all options and aimlessness.
There’s an equally fine line between having a plan and getting trapped in one.

Don’t wind up on the wrong side of these lines.

The most expensive mistake in life is inaction. Wrong choices give you opportunities to learn and grow. Making no choice steals your future altogether. So have a plan, but re-evaluate and pivot as you go.

This code you’ll be reading is made up of 100 or so rules. Rules alone won’t make you successful, any more than taking a MMA class makes you a fighter, shooting a sex tape makes you a porn star, or wearing a tuxedo t-shirt makes you a drunk. It’s a first step, not a last one.
