Rule 7: A Pro produces quality, not quantity

Posted on January 19, 2024March 27, 2025 by Duncan Zaves

Wise Pros always, and I mean always, live by this rule:

If it is worth doing at all, it is worth doing well.

This doesn’t mean work harder on everything. Quite the opposite – You need to limit what you do so you can do a few things impressively. You could probably ignore the rest of the Code entirely, and this saying alone will keep you employed. Coupled with the Code, producing quality will not only keep you employed, it will earn you respect.

Conversely, half-assing twice as many projects will put you on the chopping block when the RIF comes around. When it comes to self preservation, quality beats quantity every time. Everyone knows that you can get a quality employee to produce more, but you can’t get a poor employee to produce quality.

Pro Debate:
Does quantity ever beat quality in a workplace? Let’s see…

  1. Software Development? No.
  2. Graphic Design? No.
  3. Football Team? No.
  4. Stripclub? No.
  5. Buffet restaurant? Ah… Maybe.
